Submissions are judged on technique as well as on style and design, in two rounds of judging. The competition culminates in a live runway show held in the remarkable Merchant Taylors’ Hall in London, where finalists vie for the Golden Shears alongside second and third place trophies and cash prizes awarded on the night.

Who are we?

Held every two years, the Golden Shears brings together the best emerging talent from across the UK and Ireland to celebrate the prestige of the tailoring craft. We encourage fresh, new perspectives from fashion students and apprentice tailors to tell the next chapter in the world-famous story of British tailoring while celebrating its rich heritage. The future of British tailoring is here.

British tailoring endures as a world-famous destination for timeless craftmanship and elegance. The Golden Shears began in 1974, led by the late Robert Bright MBE, as a means to help trainees and students break into the tailoring industry and showcase their talent and skill. Over the last 50 years, the Golden Shears is proud to have supported the launch of many careers from the competition.
