Why did you apply for the Golden Shears?
I applied for the Golden Shears when it was suggested and encouraged by my bosses at Connock & Lockie. Close to the beginning of my apprenticeship, they thought it would be a good experience and challenge.
Please talk us through your design and finished garment
For my entry, I made a women’s three-piece suit in a forest green pinstripe (100% wool, 300GMS, 10.5 Oz, Dugdale Bros & Co). The jacket features bias cut panels and diagonal seaming, side body cut-outs, a single back vent, notch lapel and couture hip pockets. Cutting the pattern for this jacket was a challenge: trying to create the desired silhouette and suppression, whilst navigating the negative space from the side cut-outs. I also eliminated the shoulder seam so the pinstripe would flow seamlessly across the shoulder, which was also an unconventional cutting detail. The trousers were inspired by Scottish trews trousers, with a single pleat, displaced dart, back yoke, slanted frog pockets and turn-up hems. It took a series of pattern developments to get the placement of all the elements to lay perfectly on the body. Generally, design decisions on the placement of the pinstripes, careful treatment of the cloth whilst working on the bias, and then constructing the garments to ensure correct pattern matching, were an ongoing consideration.
Why did you choose to make it?
I chose to make this piece to utilise my creative cutting skills (having graduated from Fashion Pattern Cutting at LCF) and marry them with my love for traditional bespoke tailoring. I would love for there to be a space in tailoring that brings to life new silhouettes, ideas and details, whilst preserving the beauty, hand-work, precision and processes of the craft, for both men and women. What were you doing prior to/ alongside the Golden Shears? I was working as a tailoring apprentice at Connock & Lockie, specialising in coat making.

What are you doing now?
Since the Golden Shears, I have carried on with my apprenticeship at Connock & Lockie and am continually, improving and learning. Alongside, this I have also been working on some private commissions for bespoke suits to further my development. Also, last year, I also kept my hand in cutting for womenswear and dressmaking, completing two wedding dresses. I share my most exciting work on Instagram @kasiahughes.art
What would you say to someone considering entering the competition?
It’s so worth doing for the experience and a really great opportunity to make something of your own, to practise and to preserve the craft. You just have very little to lose.
